Spillage of cargo oil and fuel oil from ships damaged by collision
or going aground can lead to serious pollution of the sea. Nissho
Shipping has been actively ordering tankers of double-hull structure
which, compared with single hulls, helps reduce the risk of
oil spill from a hole in a wrecked ship. All the crude oil,
product and chemical tankers it owns have double-hull structure.
Ship bottom coatings are used to prevent reduction
of ship speed and increase in fuel consumption caused by corn
barnacles and other shellfish sticking to the bottom. The International
Maritime Organization (IMO) at its general assembly in November
1999 banned coatings containing organic tin. All the ships owned
by Nissho Shipping now have tin-free (TF) coatings.
Plastics, combustibles and incombustibles in garbage
from daily life on board are collected separately before disposal,
just like on land.
Bilge (mixture of oil and water) generated in the engine room by ship operation is processed by bilge separator to remove oil. The removed oil is incinerated on board.
Nissho Shipping, in cooperation with an engine manufacturer,
developed software for an electronically-controlled engine,
and installed it in a product tanker completed in 2004 for the
first time in Japan. The engine's fuel injection and exhaust
are computer-controlled to achieve optimum combustion condition
for the operation status, thereby reducing fuel consumption
and emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other hazardous substances.
To reduce emission of sulfur oxides (SOx), we use fuel with
low sulfur content in accordance with the MARPOL convention.
To reduce fuel consumption and emission of carbon dioxide, Nissho
Shipping takes such measures as adoption of a hull design to
reduce resistance, cleaning of ship bottoms to reduce resistance,
use of electronic charts and weather routing to select the optimum
route, and adoption of an electronically-controlled engine.
Nissho shipping promotes protection of the environment in the head
office, collecting wastes separately, promoting green purchasing,
saving electricity, reducing copy paper, and disposing of wastes
in accordance with the law and other related regulations.
